How Are You?
It is amazing how much we have decreased the value of this phrase. This phrase could be the key to really connecting with people and we have turned into a casual greeting with little to no meaning. This struck me last night when I arrived to work at my day job. As I walked in I said hello to a long time coworker. She responded with, “Hey, how are you?” In my distracted state I didn’t even respond. The crazy thing is she didn’t even seem to notice. The truth is she didn’t notice because she was really interested in or expecting a response.
I know you know what I am talking about. I know that you have all been on one side or the other of this same situation. This is something we all do. Someone says hello and we ask them how they are doing, even though we are probably not really interested. Well, I say STOP IT! By all means ask people how they are doing, but when you do be sure you mean it.
If you are reading this and you are in ministry, then I would hope that you really do care how people are doing. If you are reading this and you are a Christian, then you should care about how people are doing. After all, Jesus said that people would know that we were his followers by our love for each other.
So, now I ask you… How are you doing?Matt Norman
