Setting Goals For Jesus – The Paralytic

Yesterday I put up a post about the way that we set goals in the church. You can read that post HERE. Well, as I thought about this post today I had some more thoughts that I wanted to share. I’d like to take a closer look at some of the different people from this passage and what they have to tell us about today’s church. Today I want to look at the Paralytic. There are some truths about this man that I think we can learn something from. He Needed Help This man clearly needed help. It is unclear if this man was paralyzed from birth, or if this…

    Setting Goals for Jesus

have often been told that we should set goals based on what WE can control. This notion states that we should not set goals for things such as: Attendance: Because we can not MAKE people come. Salvation: Because salvation is the work of the Holy Spirit. Baptisms: Because baptism come after salvation. For most of my  ministry I have agreed with this thought. However, as I type this I find myself questioning it. During my quiet time this morning I found myself thinking about the many times that Jesus told someone that it was because of their faith that they were healed, or someone they cared about. Finally I landed…

    Unpacking Orange: #OC13 – Part 1

Ok, the Orange Conference is over and life has returned to normal (whatever that is). Well, I thought I would take some time to unpack some of the STUFF I got from the Orange Conference. Yes, I still have a suitcase full of swag that I grabbed while I was there. Don’t worry I took out all the dirty laundry. Anyway, I thought I would just go through some of the stuff I got and  share a little about it. Sunday’s Coming. Are You Ready? This was a flyer outlining the different curriculum options from the fine folks at Orange. I currently use their Curriculum for Preschool (First Look), and…

    The Word is Alive

Today I watched the Webcast from Lifeway talking about their new product, Bible Studies for Life. This is Bible study/small group materials for all stages of life. I will post my thoughts on that another time, but while I was watching the webcast there was something said that really struck me. One of the speakers said, “The Bible is not the book of the year, it’s the book of the ages.” This statement really struck me. I found myself thinking that many things avoid feeling antiquated or outdated because they are still alive, regardless of how old they are. Consider the following: Earth: Even those of us that believe in…

    I’ll Never Be The Same?

Tonight as I sit the blogger’s lounge listening to Steve Fee lead some amazing worship I find myself thinking about one of the lyrics he just sang. “I’ll never be the same again.” This is what the lyric said, but I have to ask if this really true. When we are saved are we never the same again? To say that we are never the same again is true. With salvation comes the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Clearly this can not happen without a person being changed. However, inside of us is still that sinful nature. That piece of us that lead us to sin before receiving salvation is…
